Plus500 Declares $182.5M Payout, Exceeds H1 Profit

Plus500 announced $182.5M in dividends and buybacks, more than its H1 net profit of $151.9M. The broker reported a 2% rise in net profit, with revenue up 12% but operating costs up 20% due to customer acquisition investments and US expansion.

Plus500, the London-listed CFD broker, announced on Monday a shareholder return package of $182.5 million, exceeding its first-half net profit of $151.9 million. The payout consists of $100 million in share buybacks and $82.5 million in dividends, equating to $1.2001 per share. The shares go ex-dividend on August 20, with payment on November 11. Combined with the $187.5 million package declared in February for 2025 results, total announced returns for 2026 reach $370 million.

The interim results, which are unaudited, show net profit rose 2% year-over-year to $151.9 million, while revenue increased 12% to $462.9 million. However, operating expenses jumped 20% to $278.5 million, driven by what the company called 'a deliberate step-up in customer acquisition investment', higher US-related costs, and the strengthening of the Israeli shekel. This cost pressure reduced EBITDA margin to 41% from 45% a year earlier.

Marketing technology spending rose to $80.9 million from $69.5 million, with about $16 million of that being an extra push to acquire customers. Commissions and fees, which correlate with US trading volumes, increased 34% to $44.6 million. Employee costs climbed 27% to $94.4 million, partly due to the shekel's approximately 20% appreciation against the dollar. Share-based pay across both expense lines totaled $42.9 million, up from $31.3 million.

Despite higher costs, basic earnings per share rose 6% to $2.17, aided by a 4% reduction in weighted average shares outstanding to 69.9 million, as buybacks continue to shrink the share count. The company ended June with $861.3 million in cash and no debt, underpinning its ability to fund shareholder returns.

For retail forex and CFD traders, Plus500's robust capital position and consistent payout policy signal financial stability, which is critical when choosing a broker. The company's focus on customer acquisition and US expansion may indicate continued investment in its trading platforms, potentially benefiting traders with improved services. However, rising costs and margin pressure are worth monitoring, as they could impact future profitability and, by extension, the sustainability of such generous returns.
